How does the barometer work?

A transducer installed in the Digital Barometer MSB780X operates on a principle of a vibrating cylinder. The natural frequency of the cylinder oscillation depends upon the applied pressure inside. The vibrating cylinder is embedded in a vacuum housing and the inside of the cylinder is connected to an air source. The use of high-elasticity and low hysteretic materials results in a highly stable and high-resolution measurement method. Classed as a "vibrating element" sensor, the device presents exceptional measurement performance by virtue of its operating mechanism.

4 main advantages of the vibrating cylinder

1. Stable vacuum

The monolith the transducer is made of causes minimum leakage of the air molecules - compared to other materials such as silicone. The permeability is very low or close to zero and therefore the vacuum inside of the cylinder is stable and guarantees better long-term stability.

2. Overload

The barometer operates in a range of 500 to 1100 hPa and can withstand overpressure up to 4000 hPa without the need for re-calibration. In the event of overload, the alloy element resists and no deformation or irreparable damage to the measuring element occurs.

3. Thermal hysteresis

The cylinder is made of Ni-Span-C, nickel-iron-chromium alloy, which is the material used for its low thermoelasticity. Exposure to extreme temperature does not result in material deformation and expansion mismatch issues. Even more accurate pressure reading is achieved by compensating for air humidity. This minimizes the required level of correction for temperature errors and increases the overall accuracy of the atmospheric pressure.

4. Measurement

The advantage of the vibrating cylinder technique lies in the mechanism that converts the change from pressure to a change in frequency. When pressure is applied, the stress generated in the wall of the cylinder affects the frequency directly. The cylinder acts as the complete measurement system and it is only necessary to maintain it in resonance so that the frequency can be measured.
