MicroStep-MIS, in collaboration with a local partner Carpediem Mandiri, Enterprise Electronics Corporation (EEC), and Halo Photonics, has successfully delivered a Low Level Windshear Alert System to Yogyakarta International Airport (IATA: YIA, ICAO: WAHI), Indonesia. It is one of the first integrated systems of this type in the region.
To enhance aviation safety in the region, the climatic features of the region had to be taken into account in the process of system design. The Indonesian archipelago is located at the equator and during the year it passes through two seasons. The combination of radar, working better in wet aerosols during the rainy season, and Lidar, better suited for the dry season, provides an appropriate response to the needs and requirements of the meteorologists and air traffic controllers in the country.
IMS4 LLWAS server collects measurements from Lidar and Doppler radar, performs the validations and recalculations, runs the algorithm to detect the windshear, generates the alerts, and distributes data and alerts to displays. The system also imports additional aeronautical meteorological information (METAR, SPECI, and wind data) from AWOS and integrates it with the new windshear detection system. In accordance with ICAO, FAA, WMO, and other international regulations, the windshear information is required to be updated at least every minute on the ARENA, which is 3 NM from each runway threshold with a 3-degree descent of the aircraft targeted by this system. The ARENA is crucial for pilots when taking off and landing an aircraft. The Low Level Windshear Alert System provides the operators and pilots with more detailed and timely information about weather events (wind shear, microburst, wind gust, etc.) on the descent path which supports their decision making.
Over the years, we have worked with Carpediem Mandiri on many projects. Together we have delivered and implemented a number of systems operating in the region to date. This project is another step in the deepening of our partnership. Read more about MicroStep-MIS' activities in Indonesia here.
